Celebrating History, Building Futures is our Motto

Our Seniors On The Move came up with an enervating idea for a quilting project done in 2024.  This project enhances community vibrancy and fosters community preservation while creating an activity that was invigorating for our senior’s group. We accomplish this by making a quilted blanket to display and making individual quilted blankets to hand out to seniors from our community in nursing facilities. We included a mental health component which included interaction with a mental health professional who guided discussions and gave suggestions that address grief, depression, loneliness, relationships, etc.; Once we completed the project, we had a large gathering with the seniors from our community to share blankets and stories with them. There are seamstresses, storytellers, organizers, and historians in our group who facilitated a Quilt Making Story Circle that collaborated on a Community Quilt whose design highlights the stories that emerge from the stories of those who pictures were chosen for our quilt and we used the activity to engage with community members in nursing facilities during visits.

This project, for some, was pure enjoyment, an outlet and regular socialization, sharing of memories and history and can be therapeutic for many. This project targeted the Duval Neighborhood of Northeast Gainesville, Florida (Approximate boundaries) North boundary: NE 13th Ave - South boundary: E University Ave - East boundary: NE 26th Ter - West boundary: Waldo Road); but it also was open to all seniors in the Gainesville area who wanted to participate.

We have done programing in our community for several years. We have created a common space with our community gardening in east Gainesville where residents gather weekly.  Using the arts by planting vegetables, cooking fresh veggies, sharing recipes and enjoying great socialization. We have a Seniors on the Move group that meets weekly socializing sharing spiritual enrichment with each other, arts and crafts activities, health and wellness care, healthy eating and connections to many services that assist economically and increase social cohesiveness. We do monthly residential community and business partners meetings to increase the possibilities of information flow to connect services and people to increase possibilities of community growth with knowledge and opportunities.  We also do a six-week summer camp for youth that prepares our youth for careers, economic stability and introduce them to socializations that can enhance their future endeavors after high school and a virtual cooking class for youth with a chef guiding them through.  ... And we present The GDNA'S  "Neighborhood Table" . That is right FREE food, clothing, toys, house hold goods and more .. 918 NE 18th street ... The Table is open for EVRYONE TO SETUP & TO DROP OFF FOR    "Our Neighborhood ... Your Neighborhood ... Greater Duval"

For this we give Thanks!!!!  #WeWillContinueToStandWithOurResidence

Hello Neighbors, Friends, and the Greater Gainesville Community,

Greater Duval Neighborhood Association is proud to announce our Second  Annual Fundraiser and Scholarship Gala. For the past decade, Greater Duval Neighborhood Association (GDNA) has provided services to our community through small grants, donations, and the love, sweat and tears of our residents and supporters.  At GDNA, we are dedicated to the empowerment of youth.  One of the ways we fulfill this mission is through the Building Futures Scholarship Fund, which provides critical financial assistance to students pursuing their dreams. The $2000 scholarship is awarded directly to the student once they’re accepted into a college or university. This allows them to pay for moving costs or other fees that are required once they’re accepted. Where most scholarships go directly to the school for tuition and fees, our scholarship relieves the financial burden to the family.

We are excited to host the Celebrating History and Building Futures Scholarship Luncheon on February 23rd, 2025, at the Matheson History Museum. This special event celebrates academic excellence, shares inspiring stories from scholarship recipients, and raises vital funds to support the next cohort of scholars.
To make this luncheon a success, we are seeking sponsorships and donations from valued community partners like you. Your support will directly fund scholarships that open doors for students who might otherwise be unable to pursue higher education. Last year we awarded Ms. Adriana Peterson of Eastside High School. Adriana is a pre-nursing student at Florida A&M University who is currently rocking a 3.5 GPA in her first year. With your generosity, we are looking to double our scholarship fund so that we are able to award 2 scholarships.
Here’s How You Can Help
•    Sponsorship Tiers
Gold: $2000 and up: Sponsor one or more of the scholarships. Gold sponsors featured on the final flyer and all advertisements. Tabeling opportunity at the event. 2 free luncheon tickets ($150 value).
Bronze: $1000 and up: Sponsor is featured on final flyer and all advertisements. 1 free luncheon ticket ($75 value).
Silver: $500 and up: Sponsor is featured on flyer and all advertisements.
Community Sponsorship: $75: Purchase a ticket and a pay it forward ticket for a youth or senior from the Duval Community. Sponsor is listed on event material.

Education & Outreach

Tackling the Issue

Most of our efforts pertaining to this program involve studying new approaches and developing innovative ways to implement them. We evaluate our success in this field by gathering qualitative and quantitative data, and using that information to measure shifts and changes from our baseline measurements. We provide our youth with great opportunities for success in education, by implementing programs designed to empower students and parents.
